Forestry

Middlesex County currently owns a total of 2,500 acres of woodlands of which over 2,000 acres are located in the southwest portion of the County in an area referred to as "Skunks Misery".  The County terminated a Managed Forest Agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2000 and took over the responsibility of managing its own woodlands.

In October of 2000, the County hired a consultant to complete a Comprehensive Woodlands Management Plan. The Plan will guide all activities within the Middlesex County woodlands for a period of 20 years and will consist of two component plans; a 20 year general management plan as well as five year plans which will provide the operational details.

County Council established a Woodlands Advisory Committee in 2003 to provide feedback on all matters concerning woodlands management.

For more information about your woodlot, please contact the Ontario Woodlot Association.

Hunting in County Woodlands

Hunting is allowed in all Middlesex County Woodlands. The McLaren Forest in Southwest Middlesex located directly across from Four Counties Health Services is ”ARCHERY ONLY”.  The Banks Forest in Thames Centre, located at the corner of Hwy 401 and Elgin Road (CR # 73) is also “ARCHERY ONLY”.

All other County Forests are open to hunting and regulated as to what game can be harvested and what type of firearm can be used, under the authority of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Weed Inspections

The County of Middlesex Area Weed Inspector is also the Municipal Weed Inspector for all eight local municipalities in the County.  Responding primarily to complaints, the Area Weed Inspector works with staff from local municipalities, the Ministry of Transportation, Hydro One, Railways and other agents to bring weed concerns to their attention.

The Weed Act applies only to noxious weeds that are growing in close proximity to agricultural crop lands and commercial horticultural lands.  Noxious weeds growing in urban areas can be addressed through local property standards by-laws.

A Form 1 Weed Order can be issued against the property owner; however, voluntary compliance is the most common remedy.

Fines under the Weed Act

First Offence:
$500 to $2,000

Subsequent Offences
$1,000 to $5,000
